The Goulburn River Group Practice is an accredited clinic located within the township of Seymour 100km north of Melbourne. It services the local township of Seymour and the civilian population at the nearby Puckapunyal army base. It is a four practitioner capacity clinic and support staff include a practice manager, 3 practice nurses and 5 receptionists. A pathology collection agency is also based on site and there are two pharmacies within close proximity. The operating hours are Monday through Friday 9am to 5.30pm; weekends are excluded.
The RACGP accredited supervisors include Dr Eliot Jarman and Dr Carol Liow. Registrar training includes the development of competence in the areas of Emergency Care, Paediatric Skills, Dermatology, Vaccinations, Men and Women’s Health, Medication Prescription, Clinical Referral, Procedures and Investigations, Suturing and Excisions, Fracture Management and Infection Control.
Services available at Seymour Health include radiology, dialysis, oncology, pathology, ambulatory care and visiting specialists. There is a 30 bed hospital with an emergency care department, a 30 bed nursing home and a 30 bed aged care hostel, all of which are serviced by the clinic. It is the expectation that a registrar would be available to participate at least once fortnightly in the on call roster; Visiting Medical Officer on call payments are remunerated by the hospital.
Seymour, population approximately 8000, is centrally located within the state of Victoria. There is an excellent rail service allowing easy access to Melbourne. Schools within the community include Seymour College (public – years prep to 12) and St Mary’s College (years prep to 10). Assumption College (years 7 to 12) and the International School (years 7 to 12) are both based in nearby Kilmore.
