Coolaroo Clinic is an exceptional facility and has been established since 1989. It was founded in 1989 by Dr John Hodgson and Dr Andrew Ramsay. Dr Dominic Yong then became a partner in 2000. Together they continue to own and operate the practice.
Providing patients with helpful staff and caring doctors has always been the drive surrounding the success of this facility.
The clinic consists of general practitioners, medical specialists and ancillary allied health practitioners who complement each other and strive towards our objective of providing quality health care.
Our doctors have many years of experience and come from a diverse range of skills in General Practice. Our doctors come from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures.
Coolaroo is a suburb in the Northwest of Melbourne. It is the city side of a rapidly expanding growth corridor. The patient demographics are very varied and are well suited to registrars gaining experience in the social complexities related to health. The population is culturally diverse with many language groups. They are mainly families, with average age in the 35 to 50 years. There is high unemployment so we are fully bulk-billing. We have well over 100 patients claiming Aboriginal Heritage. We are RAMA 2.
We are seeking GPT 3 or 4 only.
We have listened to past registrar’s concerns about the welcoming of new registrars to the practice: we now orientate over a 2-3 day period. We have improved processes to ensure an experienced GP is on-site to assist with any problem that might arise. Past registrars have commented on the complexities of patient presentations and that, by the end of the term, their personal satisfaction, use of appropriate M/C item numbers and overall confidence in dealing with complexity has increased. We have practice nurses and a range of allied health services to support GP’s to manage such patients.
We have experience in managing a wide range mental health issues and are involved in Primary Care Research. We keep abreast of the changes in Primary Care, Federal Government strategies, and changing Medicare rebates and PIP payments. We are collecting relevant data from our files to direct future Quality Improvement activities. Hence, we assist registrars:
- Learn how to perform minor surgical procedures: vasectomy, nail excision, skin cancers, etc.
- Ways to assist patients with psycho-social problems, chronic pain, and other medical issues that are in the popular press.
- To develop comprehensive management plans that take into account a patient’s capacity to change.
- Identify the barriers patients may not realize are hindering their overall management.
- Keep abreast of the fundamental changes in Primary Care that are required to reduce hospital admissions. This will ensure Australia’s health system, and Medicare, remain financially affordable.
At Coolaroo Clinic we get satisfaction knowing we are giving future GP’s the skills to enable them to embrace the changing health environment and can develop a successful and rewarding GP career.
