The fund offers grants to provide general practitioners across Victoria and the south-eastern region of South Australia with professional development in the area of education and training. The fund can provide amounts of up to $10,000 to individual GP supervisors or registrars working in the regions listed for professional development funding, including course fees, conference registration, equipment or texts required by a course, accommodation and economy travel. Grants cannot be used for training or programs funded through other sources or as a top-up for other funding. A total of 57 recipients received a combination of almost $350,000 from the first round of funding of the Southern GP Grant in 2018.
To be eligible, applicants must live and work in the areas listed, be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, and have demonstrated commitment to, and active participation in, the AGPT program. Completed application forms will be reviewed and ranked by the fund’s advisory committee, with consideration given to:
- Academic acheivement
- Geographical location
- Application quality
- Provision of evidence that the proposed use of the grant meets a need in the community.

The Southern General Practice Education Fund was established by Southern GP Training Ltd, a former GP regional training provider, to maintain and use its former trust funds for their intended purpose to further general practice education and training. The Fund is a sub-fund of the Australian Communities Foundation, whose trustee is Australian Communities Foundation Ltd.
