Corowa Medical Centre (Redgum Medical Group) – TT 1-4

This practice will accept applications from Training Term (TT) 1-4.

Corowa Medical Centre has been serving the region for over 100 years in an area rich in history and has recently rebranded as Redgum Medical Group. This innovative practice has three locations, including general practice across two sites, a skin clinic, obstetrics, anaesthetics and is expanding to include a state-of-the-art specialist building.

The practice has a strong commitment to employment and training for all staff and being a registered GP training provider, is very aware that accessing a range of medical services in rural and regional areas can be challenging. Their experienced health professionals are passionate about their community’s health and wellbeing, providing high-quality services across the region, with a strong focus on the patient-doctor relationship.

With two practicing GP obstetricians and four GP anesthetists, special interests range from women’s health and integrative medicine to cardiology, skin cancer and complex medical issues. Registrars can learn emergency medicine and participate in theatre lists as a VMO at the Corowa Hospital, which offers an extremely beneficial learning experience. They will also have access to a team of experienced doctors within the practice who are dedicated to high-quality patient care and work across a vast range of medicine such as anaesthetics, chronic diseases, acute medicine and paediatrics.

Fatigue management is really important to the clinic and they work with each registrar to establish a roster that best suits them. Registrars not only have access to the GP supervisor but also are allocated a ‘buddy’ in the practice. They have weekly clinical meetings, which are also used for debriefing and to promote a collegiate atmosphere in the practice.

The practice also has very experienced nurses who provide their patients with all-round care from wound care to chronic disease management and vaccinations.

With a major focus on continuous quality improvement, the practice ensures equity of access to services across their cross-border community. They have recently introduced a pulmonary rehabilitation group, in conjunction with a local exercise physiology group.

The clinic identified the need for more support and access to information in the palliative care space and developed a patient care folder and community directory. Patients were then able to keep all their healthcare information and a comprehensive list of local services together, in one handy folder.

Located on the majestic Murray River, on the border of New South Wales and Victoria, Corowa offers a fantastic regional lifestyle, with a strong sense of community and an easy commute. Major regional centres are still within easy reach, but being surrounded by nature, enjoying a great climate, affordable housing and a wide range of amenities and recreational activities, offers the ultimate work-life balance.

Savour the region’s world-class food and wine culture, Mediterranean climate and notable historic sites. Experience the wide range of outdoor activities or visit local restaurants, cafes or bustling local pubs and clubs.

Surrounded by waterways, a choice of exciting water sports are on offer. Or you can get back to nature with bushwalking, hiking, mountain biking and camping.

An example of the practice’s strong community focus is Dr Antoinette Del Popolo, who won a Primary Healthcare Award in 2019 for Outstanding Contribution to Community.

The clinic provides care to both public and privately-owned residential care facilities and doctors have hospital rights, which includes an on-call roster.

This inspiring, innovative GP training practice provides registrars with a broad training experience to enhance their clinical and procedural skills, together with the option to continue after fellowship. In the last four years, six registrars have stayed with the practice due to the welcoming, inclusive culture of the clinic and the great lifestyle of the region.
